Editing Influences

The music video below is for Jay-Zs "99 problems" which was produced by Rick Rubin.
The video itself was directed by legendary director Mark Romanek.





What i liked about this video in particular was Romanek's use of greyscale.
The contrast was very effective because it gave the video a very edgy appearance which fitted in well with the mise-en-scene of the piece ( back street new york).
His use of deliberate camera shake whilst filming also highlighted this gritty, edgy theme.

Subsequently, i have been trying out the desaturation tool on final cut pro in order to greyscale some of the performance shots. The group were pleased with the overall effect of the greyscaling and we are thinking of using it throughout the piece.
